After taking over the quarterback chores midway through last season, VYPE TOP-100 selectee Will King (6-2, 190, Sr.) is the full-time signal caller for the Buffaloes in 2019. The senior leader has rushed for over 2,400 yards the last two seasons but also showed coach David Barker that he could throw the pigskin as he passed for nearly 600 yards with eight touchdowns through the air last season. King will get plenty of help carrying the mail from Kameron Cook (5-11, 175, Sr.), who rushed for 449 yards and added another 100 yards in receiving. Bubba Benson (5-9, 182, Sr.) will also be a veteran receiver for King. The Buffs also return experience in the line with tackles Benji Jordan (6-2, 180, Sr.) and Luciano Rosales (5-10, 250, Jr.), as well as center Jackson Trantham (5-9, 205, Sr.), who Barker calls a big mauler.

Hugo graduated a lot of experience from last year’s defensive squad but there are still seven players back who saw a lot of varsity action last year. Middle linebacker Tony Perry (5-10, 210, Jr.), who had 80 tackles last season, figures to be a key part of Barker’s 3-4 defense. The secondary features three returning seniors in football-savvy Kaleb Sheaffer (6-0, 182) and Jordan Baker (6-1, 179) at the safety spots and Antonio King (5-9, 175) at corner. Baker had 60 tackles. Those three figure to make life uncomfortable for opposing receivers. Along the front line for Buffs will be noseguard Julian Jackson (5-9, 270, Jr.), who brings size and a quick first step to create havoc in opponents’ backfields, and Chance Marzek (5-10, 165, Jr.) at one of the end spots. Hugo has a lot of senior experience on the team and Barker promises his squad will be aggressive, trading size for speed this season. Perhaps Barker’s mantra to his team says it all: “There is only one thing that matters for us to be successful. One thing that is important. Do your job. Everything else is bluster and hype.”
