Coalgate’s Trey Wilkinson – Character Counts Presented by SafeGuard Insurance Solutions

Whether it’s the first play or the final play of the game, there’s no quit in the efforts of Trey Wilkinson. The two-way starter for the Coalgate Wildcats believes a person’s character is best reflected when the pressure is on.

“When no one else is around to watch you or tell you what to do, you have to decide do I take the easy way or do what’s right,” explained Wilkinson. “I just try to be a stand-up person and be good to other people first and foremost.”

Coalgate coach Nathan Hill admires the determination of commitment of the Wildcats sophomore.

“Trey only know one way to do things…and he always does them right,” complimented Hill. “You’ll never have to question his effort. If he does make a mistake he doesn’t look around for someone else to blame, he owns it and will give his best effort to insure he let it happen again.”

A standout in the classroom, Wilkinson studies his classroom game plan to insure he maintains to grade results including the challenges of master Honors Math among his AP class schedule while keeping a 3.8 GPA.

When asked about what influences shaped his decision making and hard work commitment, Wilkinson didn’t hesitate to credit the living by example efforts of his parents.

“My dad and mom have shown me the importance of doing what’s right,” Wilkinson said proudly. “Together they show me how and why rather than just telling me what to do.”

Understanding his responsibility as a role model, Wilkinson enjoys the chance to interact with younger kids in the Coalgate community.

“When I was a kid growing up, I always looked up to the high school football and baseball players, so I’m sure they’re watching us now,” said Wilkinson. “Spending time with the younger kids gives me an opportunity to share a word of encouragement with them and remind me to set the example.”

In addition to his role at running back and linebacker for the Wildcats this season in football, Wilkinson proved he had big play potential by breaking into the starting lineup in baseball last spring as a freshman.

For those who know the determination of Trey Wilkinson, there’s never a doubt that he strives daily to prove that hard work and commitment go hand in hand with doing things the right way and in the end prove that Character Counts.
