Valliant’s Owen Guest – Athlete Spotlight Presented By McCurtain County National Bank

It’s all about the team with Owen Guest who plays baseball and basketball for the Bulldogs. You see it when he talks about pro athletes he admires.

“In baseball I really like Mike Trout because of his mentality. He always goes 100 percent and it’s never about ‘me’ but always about ‘we’. In basketball it’s LeBron (James). In his interviews you’ll notice he never says ‘I’, he always says ‘we’,” said the senior-to-be.

As a junior on this spring’s roster, Owen stepped up to become a team leader and says that a leader has to always set a good example for those around him.

“A good leader should lead by example more than anything. I don’t think a leader can go out and do bad things and then tell others to do the right thing. He’s got to be doing the right thing himself all the time.”

Owen started playing baseball with his cousins early in life and was playing T-ball by the age of three. Basketball came later in life and while he enjoys playing both, baseball is probably his first love. On the ball diamond, you’ll find Guest at shortstop or third base generally and on the court he’s Mr. Versatility.

“Wherever they need me to play,” he laughs.

In school Owen is an officer in the school FFA chapter where he is involved in the forestry program and enjoys working in the shop and other hands-on activities and at home, he and the family like to get together for a spirited game of spades. He and his younger brother also have a batting cage at home that they can use to help stay in shape during this down time.

This spring’s battle with the COVID-19 virus has caused Owen Guest to pause and reflect on what’s truly important in life.

“Sports is not everything. Eventually sports goes away and so I think you’ve got to dwell on things other than sports for the future.”

Pretty wise words for everyone in this time of uncertainty.
